Discover the joy of learning and friendship with a heavenly new collection! From Executive Producer Roma Downey (“Touched by an Angel”) and Writer Phil Lollar (“Adventures in Odyssey”) comes the much-anticipated faith-based educational series, LITTLE ANGELS, soaring onto DVD from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Review:

Little Angels is a sweet educational preschool series that features Pre-school twins Alex and Zoe and eight painted Little Angels on their ceiling watching over them. The angels come to life when the children need them and help guide them through the challenges of obedience, persistence, and even learning their ABCs.

These DVDs remind me of the PBS show Dragon Tales my kids used to watch, except with an eternal twist. Not only do the Little Angels teach the children life lessons, but they do it through bringing Bible stories to life.

I sat down to watch the DVD with my nine year old and by the end said the angels were chubby and cute and the songs were “catchy.” Though I don’t have preschoolers anymore, these DVDs are a great addition to any preschool mom’s library!

These DVDs were the brain child of actress, author, and producer, Roma Downey, best known for her Emmy and Golden Globe nominated role as Monica, the gentle hearted angel and star of the hit television series “Touched by An Angel” which aired on CBS for 9 seasons.

And I’m giving a couple of copies away. Just leave your name and email in the comment section to be entered to win! And come back tomorrow for an exclusive interciew with Roma about this series, her faith, and being a mom and another entry in this drawing!

I had the privilege to interview Roma Downey and ask her questions about her  life as a busy professional and mom and about her faith.

Roma, where did the idea for the LITTLE ANGELS series come from?

God in Heaven, my Savior dear

Watch over my children and draw thou near

Send your little angels to be at their side

To light and to guard to love and to guide

This is a prayer I was taught growing up in Ireland and as a young child used to say it nightly with my parents. I was raised to believe in angels, and it was comforting and reassuring as a child to feel that there were angels always watching over me.  Then for almost ten years I starred on the hit CBS television show “Touched By An Angel.”  I played Monica, the tender hearted messenger, and while the story changed from week to week, the message was always the same – There is a God and God Loves us. It was about doing the right thing and sharing God’s love.

I wanted to be able to bring that same message of love and reassurance to young children and “Little Angels” does just that.  The series provides good, warm and wonderful instruction about life lessons and important learning concepts, told through colorful animation.  My “Little Angels” are painted on a mural on the ceiling of Alex and Zoe’s nursery. They are the last thing the children see when they go to sleep at night and the first thing they see when they wake up in the morning

Alex and Zoe are adorable four-year-old twins and they face all the challenges that any preschooler has to deal with and the Little Angels get to share adventures with them along the way

When Mom and Dad aren’t around, the “Little Angels” come to life and fly down and interact with the twins. They provide the kids with real practical learning skills such as ABC’s, 123′s and Animals, but they also teach important core family values such as being kind and sharing, being truthful and honest and showing gratitude and love.

There are eight little angel characters each with a distinct personality and they are always there when the kids need them most.  The angels also offer the kids a glimpse into the world of the Bible by whisking Alex and Zoe back in time to share in some of our beloved Bible stories. And because the angels are messengers from above, they are there to always remind Alex and Zoe (and our little viewers at home) that they are never alone, for God is always watching over them and loving them. In addition, Little Angels is super cute and funny!  It has colorful animation, adorable characters, and charming, upbeat sing-along music!  This beautiful, heartfelt series wants to share a message of love and the joy of learning with preschool children everywhere.

How has your faith played a role in this project?

My faith is central to who I am so it plays a big role in everything in my life. I am fortunate that much of my working life has been about sharing inspiration and hope. I believe in God and am eager to share His message of love with everyone.

What obstacles did you have to overcome to see this project through to completion?

The challenge in launching a new children’s series is spreading the word. I know once families discover “Little Angels,” they will love it.  I have 3 amazing DVD’s –  “Little Angels ABCs,” “Little Angels 123’s” & “Little Angels Animals” plus musical CD’s, “Little Angels” Storybooks and even a “Little Angels” app…..great news for a long car ride!

I know that as parents we are looking for product we can trust and “Little Angels” was created with that in mind.  We even have the MOPs (Mothers of Pre-schoolers) Seal of Approval.

You’ve written two other books, “Love is a Family,” and “Leave a Message with the Moon,” and recorded an inspirational album of poetry called “Healing Angel,” not to mention your television work on Touched By An Angel, and now this project. How did you do all this and be mom to three children?

My husband, Mark Burnett, is a great partner and as busy as it gets, we just try to make our family a priority.  We have 3 teens so its hectic sometimes, too.  Listen, nothing is perfect but we keep doing the best we can. We listen and share and try to make time for each other.  One thing we really consider to be important is our family dinner, free of television and cell phones. Quality time together — that’s the key.

If you could do one thing over again related to your career and parenting, what would it be?

I am not a big one for “would have, could have, should have”….live and learn and move on.  Forgiveness of self and forgiveness of others. Life is too short to not be willing to move forward with gratitude because it’s all a blessing really. It’s the glass half full, to see what you have and to be grateful.

Great, advice, Roma! What would you tell moms struggling to balance their family life and dreams they know are from God?

You know how on a plane when the flight attendant reminds us in an emergency to take the oxygen mask first before assisting our child?  It reminds me that sometimes we just need to breathe, take a bath, find a moment to recharge.  We are busy juggling our lives and careers and kids and giving of ourselves. Being a Mom is rewarding but it can be hard work. God is the oxygen. Take time to breath in His blessings and trust that His air supply is unconditional and never ending.

Well, said! Roma, thank you so much for sharing you heart and love of God and for this series “Little Angels” which I know will bless so many!

If you would like to be entered to win one of the “Little Angels” dvd please leave your name and email.

Downy-cherry: New Leaf | Wild West Yorkshire nature diary

Photograph of the back of one of the leaves seen through the microscope.

TURNING OVER a new leaf, as a change from the chairs, hands or architectural details that I normally draw when I’m in a waiting room, I pick up these dried leaves as we walk into Orchard Croft health centre in Horbury this morning.

It’s drawn with my new Art Pen and the Noodler’s brown ink flows just fine. Could this supplant my ArtPen filled with black as my favourite pen? It’s lovely to write with.

As the nib is a size up from what I’m used to, fine rather than extra-fine, the line tends to be bigger and bolder, which is no bad thing, I just need to approach drawing in a bolder and more confident way. No tentative whiffling movements! (whiffle meaning a slight movement, as if blown by a puff of air. In last week’s BBC TV bird spectacular EarthFlight, the word was used to describe the twist geese often give as they land, letting air out from under their wings by tipping over at an angle of 45 degrees).

I realised that in order to identify the species I was going to have to unfurl the dried up leaf. I had thought that it was the leaf of a species of Prunus, an ornamental cherry growing by the car park but there’s hardly anything in the way of teeth along the edge of the leaf, just a suggestion of it on the right margin of the larger apical leaf. There’s no suggestion that the smaller leave ever have a pointed tip, as cherry leaves do, although the damaged larger leaf might once have had a tip.

The buds in the axils of the leaves are reddish and pointed, resembling an apple pip. There are downy hairs on the back of the leaf, visible with a hand lens or through the microscope (top).

Despite all those white downy hairs this isn’t the leaves of Whitebeam; they aren’t broad enough. Some kind of willow perhaps, such as Goat Willow (but there are no auricles at the base of the leaves).

This is the problem with trying to identify a tree from the leaves only; you don’t have twigs, bark and fruits to give you extra clues. Still, more interesting than drawing the chairs in the waiting room again!

HOLDEN (CBS) – An 80-year-old woman from Holden has lost nearly $400,000 in a scam, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

The woman received a letter in the mail that said she had been awarded a large sum of money, but to claim her prize, she needed to pay several fees and complete paperwork, according to the paper.

She allegedly began sending the money without her children’s knowledge, and began receiving more letters that promised even more money.

She sent about $400,000 over the course of a year, police told the paper.

Police said that there are many other known victims of the scam. Federal authorities are assisting police with the investigation.

Downy-cherry: Downy-cherry

Today I decided to post a "Teenage Death" song and hope to post more of them in the near future. The popular ones, of course, are Teen Angel by Mark Dinning and Tell Laura I Love Her by Ray Peterson. But there were MANY more!

Listen to this song, and pay attention to the girl singing in the background. She's not credited on the label, but I think I know who she is! Here's Ballad Of Billy Brown by Mort "Doc" Downey Jr. on Magic Lamp 517 from 1964:

Pulling together background information about an obscure record can be really challenging. Maybe that's why it's so much fun! You can get a lot of information these days by doing a Google search. But that doesn't help you find NEW information. For that, you've got to talk to record collectors and dealers, check out rumors, track down and interview people who may have been involved, and sometimes, just do a lot of listening.

The background of this particular song is fascinating.

Sean Morton Downey Junior was born on 9 December 1932 in Los Angeles. His father, who was often referred to as The Irish Nightingale, was a very popular singer in the 1930's and 1940's. Both adopted a stage name by dropping their first name, Sean. His mother, Barbara Bennett, was an actress, singer and dancer. His famous parents had built quite a fortune, so Mort grew up surrounded by fame and high society. Mort was actually raised next door to the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts! (Robert Downey Jr. is not related, by the way.)

In 1951, Mort went to New York University. He became a disc jockey and program director at WPOP in Hartford, Connecticut. He continued working in the radio business for a while, moving around the country to work at KAFY in Bakersfield, KDEO in San Diego, KRIZ in Phoenix, KJR in Seattle, and WFUN in Miami, where he was rated the number one DJ in town.

Here's a little sample of what Mort sounded like on the radio in 1964, while working at KDEO in San Diego:

While working in radio, Mort stayed active in the music business. He wrote several songs, starting with one called Money Marbles And Chalk, which he wrote when he was just sixteen years old. He wrote ten more songs between 1948 and 1953 that were recorded by big stars like Eddie Fisher, Patti Page, Sammy Davis Jr., Pat Boone, Billy Joe Royal, and Johnny Tillotson, who became one of Mort's good friends. Mort recorded several of his own records between 1959 and 1964. The earliest one I own is on Bull Dog 105 featuring A Tear Fell In The Chapel and Through The Tender Years. His name is credited as Shawn Downey on that record. He also cut Love Bug and Rags To Riches as Morton Downey Jr on Contender 1317 in 1959. He made another record in 1961 on Wye 1010 featuring Three Steps To The Phone with I Beg Your Pardon using the name Morton Downey Jr And The Terrytones. In 1962, he cut a record on Personality 3506 called Little Miss USA with Football Freddy, this time with his name spelled Mortin Downey.

Finally, in 1963, he ended up working with the very small Magic Lamp record label, owned by a very prominent bass player in Los Angeles, Joe Osborn, who ran the Magic Lamp studios out of the garage of his house. Magic Lamp only lasted 12 months, but during this time Joe Osborn also produced several other artists. Mort cut this record at that studio.

Mort also claimed to have written Pipeline by the Chantay's and Wipe Out by the Surfaris, but this is disputed by the former members of those bands. However, Pipeline is credited as produced by "Downey Records" and was first recorded on the Princess label. Mort claims he sold that song to Dot Records for $14,000. There's also a good chance that Mort was involved in the making of
Cinnamon Cinder (It's A Very Nice Dance) by the Pastel Six on Zen 103 in 1963. The Cinnamon Cinder was a chain of nightclubs started by KRLA disc jockey Bob Eubanks. It spawned a television show called The Cinnamon Cinder Show where local acts performed live, usually backed by the "house" band, one of which was The Pastel Six. This record is also credited as produced by Downey Records on the label. Have a listen to the song and see if you can hear Mort Downey on it:

Joe Osborn produced several other artists, including a young drummer named Mickey Jones, who went on to become a member of The First Edition backing future Country singer, Kenny Rogers. Mickey's 1966 single on Magic Lamp 705 is called I Can't Live Without You by Mickey Jones And The Triumphs. That record, a Beatles-meets-Beach Boys uptempo pop song, features an uncredited female singer in the background. That voice is none other than Karen Carpenter, well before her and her brother Richard became famous as The Carpenters! I'd play it for you if I could, but I haven't found that record yet. If you have a copy, I'd sure love to hear it!

Richard Carpenter loved music, and he encouraged his kid sister Karen to join him in the music business. The Carpenter family had moved from New Haven, Conecticut to 13024 Fidler Avenue on the south side of Downey, California in June 1963. This is the house where they lived.

Richard entered California State University when he was seventeen. Karen was still in high school. She loved sports, but hated gym class. She was able to substitute Band for Gym, and also joined the school's choir to avoid Geometry! She marched in the drum line with her glockenspiel, but soon became extremely fond of the drums. Her parents bought her a drum set and she became addicted to it. She played so often, her mom had to keep a stock of Band-Aids for her overworked fingers.

On 13 May 1966, Karen Carpenter was officially signed to Magic Lamp records and cut her very first record on that label. Only 500 copies were pressed, with brother Richard, who wrote both sides, playing keyboards, Joe Osborn on bass, and no doubt Karen on drums. That record, on Magic Lamp 704, is worth around $4,500 today!

Here's I'll Be Yours by Karen Carpenter on Magic Lamp 1966:

And here's the flip side, Looking For Love:

Now, you may want to listen to Ballad Of Billy Brown by Mort Downey again. Although that record was made two years earlier, it's VERY possible that the uncredited female voice on there is also a very young Karen Carpenter. This is an unsubstantiated rumor. But, if it's true, that would make THIS song the very first time Karen Carpenter appeared on a record!

After Magic Lamp went bankrupt, Joe Osborn let Karen and Richard continue to use the studio to record demo tapes. They teamed up with four other student musicians from Long Beach State to form a band called Spectrum, performing at the Whisky A-Go-Go. A member of Spectrum, John Bettis, continued working with the Carpenters on all their later recordings, helping Richard compose many of their songs. Eventually, Karen and Richard were discovered by Herb Alpert, who signed them to his A&M Records label, and the rest, as they say, is history!

Karen Carpenter passed away on 4 February 1983 from complications of anorexia. She had been struggling with her weight from the time she was a child. Her rapid gains and losses took a toll on her body, and finally poisoned her heart.

Mort Downey left radio in the late 1960's and headed to Washington D.C. to get involved in politics. He became a political activist and consultant. He worked in the Justice Department under Bobby Kennedy. He fought to get answers from politicians, which led him to national television appearances in the 1970's with Phil Donahue. He spent time in Africa helping refugees in Biafra. He also started an ABA basketball franchise, the New Orleans Buccaneers. He helped found the WBO professional boxing organization. He even tried to establish the World Baseball Association in 1974, but the WBA never played a single game.

Mort's passion for politics reached a peak in 1979 when he ran for President in the Democratic Primary. That's very ironic, when you consider how much he turned against that party shortly afterward! He returned to radio in the 1980's, but now as a talk show host. He worked in Orlando, Chicago, Cleveland, San Francisco, and Sacramento. He was a pioneer of controversial talk radio, setting the stage for folks like Rush Limbaugh, who actually replaced him on KFBK radio in Sacramento, and who went on to find great success when his show was syndicated nationally. Mort was fired from that job in 1983 after telling an "ethnic" joke about an Asian member of the City Council. He never apologized for that joke.

Mort went to Seacaucus, New Jersey (a place where I lived for a while around that same time) to start a very controversial local talk show on WWOR TV. His catch phrase was "Zip it!" He'd chain smoke during the show, blow smoke in his guest's faces, and call them "pablum puking liberals." He tried to anger his guests, sometimes provoking them to get into physical confrontations. In fact, he once riled up Roy Innis of CORE to the point where he shoved Al Sharpton into his chair, knocking him to the floor!

Sean Morton Downey Jr. died on 12 March 2001. He'd been battling lung cancer since 1996 and underwent several surgeries. He lost all but two-thirds of his one lung. A medical mistake also cost him part of his windpipe. Despite these hardships, he never stopped planning new projects.

You'll hear lots of interesting records like this on MusicMaster Oldies. If you hear one that you've never heard before, and you really like it a lot, let me know. I'll post something about it for you!

Downy-cherry: Downy-cherry

New Year’s Day was icy cold, but we and the other birders from the Denver Audubon Society chapter were not to be deterred from counting as many birds as we could on that day. It was the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count, an event Jim and I have been involved in almost every year since 1978. If you would like to know more about the Christmas Bird Count, please go here: http://birds.audubon.org/christmas-bird-count.

Our territory in the Cherry Creek area included the Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver Country Club, Washington Park, Cheeseman Park and the campus of DU. All together we counted 30 species of birds, most of which were Canada geese, crows and robins, but we did score a merlin and a bald eagle, both of which earned bragging rights at the after count dinner. We were treated to sightings of cedar waxwings, downy woodpeckers, house finches and a spotted towhee among other avian friends. Northern shovelers, common goldeneyes, buffleheads and mallards dabbled in the frigid waters of Cherry Creek as we shivered in the north wind. Two chapter members prepared and served a delicious hot lunch in their home, giving the group a chance to warm up before continuing the count in the afternoon. It was a great day! We met a delightful group of bird enthusiasts and got to explore some areas of our neighborhood that were new to us.

Typical of the schizophrenic weather of Denver, temperatures continued to climb for the rest of that week and by Thursday we were biking the Platte River bicycle trail in shorts and shirtsleeves. Here are a few photos of that ride.

Boston Borough Council - We're planting trees for our Queen

Sun-sparkled frost didn’t deter youngsters from nearby St Thomas’s Primary School when they walked to Boston’s Wyberton Low Road allotments site to help plant a jubilee copse.
The children, aged seven and eight, braved freezing, but sunny, conditions to help plant a copse of 100 trees on Cuckoo Land to mark The Queen’s diamond jubilee.

Teams of children worked with teachers, teaching assistants and Boston Borough Council staff and helpers to plant field maple, wild cherry, goat willow, downey birch, oak, rowan, crab apple, lime and wayfaring.
The children’s jubilee copse is the second on Cuckoo Land – 25 trees have been planted near the car park.
The project is part of a Woodland Trust initiative to get up to three million people involved in planting six million trees across the UK.
A shrub area containing native species and small trees will complete landscaping at the site where there are 100 allotments rented out by the council.
Ian Farmer, the council’s partnerships and sustainability manager, said: “Cuckoo Land site now forms a community green space and is a favourite circular walk for residents seeking gentle exercise and fresh air.”
Kay Hayden, Health Network Co-ordinator, who helped out with the tree planting, said: “The children enjoyed it. They walked to and from school and had exercise gardening, which is good for physical and mental health and wellbeing.”
The jubilee copses complement jubilee community orchards previously planted at the allotments and Witham Way Country Park.
Jubilee diamond oaks are being offered to each parish council, to plant in prominent locations, and it is hoped that further community planting schemes will be carried out during 2012 to provide a lasting legacy to mark the jubilee.

Netflix Instant Cherry-Pick of the Week: Ally McBeal, Season Four ...

Did you know that Robert Downey, Jr. is in an entire season of Ally McBeal and it was the best season ever? Sure you’ve probably heard the rumors, he was written out of the show twice due to drugs and jail, but that still doesn’t change that Jr. is incredibly talented, does a great job in this show, and you desperately, desperately want Ally and the charming/witty/eccentric Larry Paul to end up together. (I suspect they might have if real life hadn’t gotten in the way.) Though admittedly, the ways they write him out are a little thin, it seems that the writers were pretty stuck and did the best they could. (But the first way they wrote him out was much better and made more sense than the second and when he got written back in suddenly, that didn’t really make sense.) But I’m just glad the writers had the sense to have Jr. and Taye Diggs spontaneously break out in a dance together to imaginary Barry White music in the unisex bathroom. What other show has that? But do be ready to have your heart broken by season’s end.

Until I decided to cherry-pick this season, I had only seen parts of Ally McBeal while flipping channels and found it pretty entertaining (aside from the dancing baby. That’s a little too weird for me.) But it’s a very odd and amazing show with a lot of things going for it, many that will surprise you. It’s also very empowering (I love how Ally constantly shoves men on the street who walk into her and don’t apologize.) and Calista Flockhart is captivating. I’m not surprised that this show won an Emmy, and now that I’ve seen the famous season four, I just might start it from the beginning. But I’d skip season five. Though Jr. in actually in it once, it’s a hallucination and not worth it, and I just don’t like the direction the whole show goes that season or the very underwhelming conclusion of the whole series.

Some great Ally-Larry moments:
(This one’s even better in English.)
